Product Description
The perimenopausal years can start as early as age thirty-five and last for up to ten years. This transitional period in a woman's life has often been misdiagnosed or ignored. Now Stephanie Bender, an expert in women's hormonal health, sounds a wake-up call for the confusing years before menopause, which require special emotional, dietary, and health guidance.

The Power of Perimenopause explains how symptoms such as irregular cycles, night sweats and insomnia, decreased libido, memory lapses, and mood swings can be traced to fluctuating hormones. It gives detailed recommendations on how to use both conventional and alternative approaches to lessen symptoms, including the most up-to-date research and new treatments. Bender also goes beyond medical advice to show women how all facets of their lives, from diet to attitude to lifestyle, can be transformed to make this an exciting and productive phase. Perimenopause is a time when women can reconsider their beliefs and priorities with newfound wisdom--perhaps discarding outmoded images of female beauty and examining their relationships with lovers and family on a deeper level. The Power of Perimenopause explores this neglected age with practical ways to enhance the quality of all areas of women's lives.

1 out of 5 stars Not a big help   August 4, 2008
I didn't find this book to be very helpful at all. I've since found others that were much better. Keep looking.

1 out of 5 stars Say "no" to perimenopause   January 13, 2008

Perimenopause is a marketing construct, intended to sell drugs, books and other products by instilling self-doubt and insecurity. Resist the effort to pathologize everything about women's bodies.

3 out of 5 stars Great Informative Read   January 14, 2005

When this life transition smacks you in the face, you want to read anything you can about this occurance. While this was not the best book I found, it was very helpful. Certainly worth buying used.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but where's the beef?   November 2, 2001

Filled with stories of patients, fan mail from readers, and self-serving descriptions of dialogs with women. The text is poorly organized so it is difficult to find and research specific symptoms.

The answer to most symptoms, such as insomnia, are herbal remedies which may or may not work, depending on the woman. There is a discussion of hrt, but you can learn more reading the latest issue of Ladies Home Journal, or some other woman's magazine.

The book was disappointing on several levels, but if you like to commiserate with other women (and their spouses) going thru this life cycle - and who doesn't? - then this book may make you feel better.

I did not get from this book what I thought was needed from a woman in her mid 50's. Very sorry I purchased it.
