Mediocre at best... November 1, 2008 Overall, sloppily put together. I found the book to have many errors... in the prac. test answer guide, for example, one explanation refers to the right answer but the letter choice is listed incorrectly. There are typos throughout the book. Information is repeated, word for word, in different sections, probably so you can review each section independently of the others, but still, it's a lot of "filler". Many practice test questions were not covered in the review material, which makes no sense for a comprehensive review guide. Reviewing the practice test answers using the CD software was a bit cumbersome. I haven't taken the exam yet, but after using this book, I'll definitely NOT rely on it as my only prep source. There are too many comments in other reviews about inconsistencies between the guide material and the actual test material. I can't imagine giving this guide 5 stars unless I was related to the author. ;)
Questionable Answers June 18, 2008 I bought this for my husband to review for the test, however, when we studied it, there appear to be several errors. I'm a teacher myself..and, mind you, I didn't have time to look up the answer to be sure I was correct, so I can't give examples. Just check when it sounds wrong .. if you have time.
It's better than nothing!
This book was not helpful at all June 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I feel this book was a waste of my money and time. The Subject area test here in Florida it is not consistant with any of the million guides that are flowing around. I did not pass the test and I can't find one that can come close to the test.Anyhow, this book did not help me AT ALL so do not bother buying it. It will be a waste of time.
Not as helpful as you would think May 30, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Thankfully, I passed the FTCE easily on my first attempt yesterday. Unfortunately, this book had nothing to do with that accomplishment. I'm not familiar with other prep guides, but there has got to be one out there that is better than this!
First, the book has very little to do with the actual test. Do they ever tell you that the test is organized so that your first 45 questions are language arts, next 45 social studies and third 45 questions are PE, music and art? No! The chapters aren't even arranged in the order the test gives them. The information written about the test info and scoring is all verbatim what you can find on the FTCE website.
Also, this book's practice tests very heavily use questions which give a scenario and then four statments (preceded by Roman numerals I, II, III and IV) and asks you which are true. Then your choices might say something like: "A) only II, B) I and II, C) I and IV, D) III and IV." I'm talking dozens of examples like this. In reality, my test had one such question. Other sample items give a long scenario and then the next several (up to nine) questions relate back to this scenario. How many items like this were on my actual test? None.
Overall, the guide did not align to the test at all.
Secondly, the book is full of typographical errors. Many sentences are unreadable. Here's one not too bad example about the Earth's core, often you can find more than one of these per page. "It is made of solid iron and nickel make up the core, which is about 7,000 kilometers in diameter." Either "it is made of solid iron and nickel," OR "solid iron and nickel make up the core," not both!
Paragraph upon paragraph is simply copied and pasted into numerous sections. Look for the exact same paragraph about puberty and embarassment caused by it in the science, PE and health sections, all within about 30 pages of each other. This happens time and time again. Without all the repetition, the book could have been many, many pages shorter.
If you are studying for the FTCE Elementary, save your money! Go to the FTCE website, download their study guide for about $5. Do the research online. They tell you exactly what you need to know. You will learn and remember more--and actually be looking at material you will need for this test. Good luck!
Great book - If you read it you will pass the test! April 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I borrowed this book from a friend and yes it was very lengthy but all of the information was useful and you should be aware of it if you plan to teach. I just completed a MA and was transitioning from industry to education and I found this to be a great refresher course for elementary topics. I procrastinated and did not have time to read the whole thing but after the test, I looked up every question I thought I missed and found them in this book! The book covers a lot of stuff that was not on the test, of course they cannot know what questions will be chosen for the actual test but it did cover every question that was on the test!
