5 out of 5 stars Just geeky enough   June 27, 2006

The first person I would recommend this book to would be someone who is considering a career choices and migh be interesetd in WDI (I think this guide is secretly a recruiting tool). It opens the mind to the possibilites (job catagories, a sense of what imagineering acomplishes using real world examples, and resources for more in-depth information) of a career at WDI. It is just geeky enough to get someone's neuron's firing in that direction and also to give Disney afficianodos a bit of insider info in a compact form.

3 out of 5 stars Depressingly lightweight   June 15, 2006

While there are a few interesting tidbits about the design of the Magic Kingdom, the writing is far too simplistic for my tastes. Also, while it's nice to have all of the photos of production designs, etc. the format of the book renders them too small to be effective or appreciated. It's not a terrible book, it just isn't the indepth exploration of park design for which I was hoping.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, fun ...but small   June 11, 2006

In my opinion, what really makes a Disney theme park is not the excitement level of the rides or the number of the attractions, but the atttention to detail and craftsmanship that goes so far in creating the feeling of being in an entirely different place. Often these details are subtle, even sublime - you may not notice them individually, but in the aggregate, they create that unique sense of place that only Disney parks seem to have. That's the art of Disney Imagineering, and in this book the Imagineers give you some insight into how the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disey World was created.

After a brief introduction to what imagineering is and a glossary of important terms, the book provides a brief history of the origin of WDW. But the bulk of the quide is divided into sections, one for each area of the MK park. Through photos, drawings and clever text, the reader is provided with background and insight into how some of the park's most famous attractions were created, with special attention paid to those all-imprtant details. It's entertaining and informative, and a real treat for someone like myself who just can't get enough background information on the parks.

My only complaint about the book is an unfair one (hence the 5-star rating). The book is clearly called a "field guide" and indeed its small format (4" x 7.75", 128 pages) make it suitable for carrying around in a pocket or pack to consult while visiting the Magic Kingdom. But the small size doesn't really do justice to the illustrations - it's bit hard to see all the detail in the small pictures. If the book were a larger size it would be even more informative, if less portable.

Nevertheless, this guide ia a excellent addition to my Disney theme park library.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a disappointment   May 31, 2006

First of all, let me start by saying that I love Disney World and have a hard time finding fault in anything Disney. I just got back from Disney and decided to buy this book and the Epcot book while I was still in the Disney spirit.

However, I must say that I was a bit disappointed with this work. The first problem I have with this book is that it is not that much more than a pamphlet. It's only about 4 inches wide and 8 inches high. It's basically half of a book.

The small size leads to my next problem with this book. The text and the graphics are entirely too small. If you buy this book I suggest you invest in a large magnifying glass because you will have a difficult time making out any of the graphics with the naked eye. You will also need to read this book under a 100-watt light bulb because this is not a book to read in bed under dim light.

I was also disappointed with the quality of the graphics. There is so much these guys could have done with this work if they hire some good graphic artists. I would have loved to see large concept drawings of the original designs and even some modern 3-D graphics to illustrate some of the key points (i.e. site lines, architecture, etc.). The fact that the maps and photos were smaller than thumb nails made it difficult to appreciate any of the content. There is a book I recently purchased from Amazon called Anatomy of a City that is a good example of what I would have wanted from this book.

I gave the book two stars because a lot of the content was informative (just not enough of it). I just hope somebody reads this review and decides to take this series of books up a notch or two.
