Use it to study for the GRE subject test in Biology August 21, 2007 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This was my textbook for General Biology as a freshman bio major, and I only read parts of it at that time. It helped me do well in my class, and I particularly liked how it explained the cellular and molecular topics, and DNA, which are often so difficult for freshman to learn for the first time. I took the GRE Biology subject test as a senior and purchased a specific GRE Biology test preparation book, which was basically useless. I then read the entirety of the Campbell book (albeit rather hastily) over the period of a few days before my test. While it certainly didn't include all the details that I'd learned in my upper division courses, it served to fill in my deficiencies (plant biology, ecology) and refresh the rusty stuff (evolution, phylogenetics). I realized what an awesome summary it is of all biology. Of course it doesn't go deep into specific topics, but I think it's the best overview of general biology that I've seen, and it covers all the basic topics very effectively. I would heartily recommend it be read from cover to cover as a study guide for undergraduate biology comprehensive exams, AP biology exam, and GRE biology subject test. I scored in 97th percentile on my GRE and I know that wouldn't have happened without this book - it was a great fusion of the knowledge I'd acquired in my studies and made me feel great about my understanding of the subject of biology as a whole (and it helped me get admitted to grad school!)
The Benchmark for all Great Biology books May 13, 2007 This book is detailed, complete, and very in-depth. The illustraions alone explain concepts well and are very easy to understand. For anyone taking the AP biology exam GET THIS BOOK

What can I say, It's a college book! It arrived in perfect shape and I am learning more than I ever knew about Biology.
I can't imagine a better biology book January 28, 2007 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I am not a student but a middle-aged adult who bought this book solely out of interest in the subject. I was shocked by how well it is produced. It's supplemented by tons of pictures and illustrations, so even difficult subjects are made easy to comprehend. That's important, given that modern biology has so much to do with physics and chemistry. The writing is clear and concise; as are the styles for the headings, text blocks, etc. At first I was put off by the price, but it's well worth it and they've earned it.
Excellent book for everyone! January 22, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I used this textbook in a lower-level undergrad course in biology. It is fantastic. The explanations are very concise, and the illustrations make the material much easier to understand. I have found myself referencing this book over and over in my upper-level courses. Many times this book can sum up a concept better than my more detailed textbooks. Get this book - you won't regret it!
