A must for new Sanibel visitors August 31, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thought I was fairly familiar with the Sanibel Island area, but this book definitely gave me new insight. The author definitely "knows her stuff" and has written a very informative and interesting guide. Anyone visiting Sanibel (especially first-timers) should definitely get a copy before they go.
The most personable guidebook ever. July 26, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We visited Sanibel and Captiva islands for the first time in June 2004. It was everything we hoped it would be thanks to this book. I must have read the book 15 times front to back before we left. I loved the given itinerary- it made organizing our time in order to experience everything so easy and we never felt rushed.
I am a huge fan of Frommer's guidebooks. Since they offer little information regarding the islands, I purchased this book instead which came highly recommended. It was really neat to get an actual islander's point of view but I did occasionally miss the to-the-point opinions of Frommer's guidebooks. The book is occasionally generic when recommending dining options.
However, I have to say that you should NEVER visit these islands without first purchasing this book. It taught us how to appreciate island life and we had a wonderful relaxing vacation. There are descriptions of each shell found on the island as well as each bird, turtle, etc. It was fun to open up the book at the end of the day and find the names of both the shells we had collected and the birds we had seen. Have a great time in Sanibel!!
Sanibel and Captive: A guide to the Islands by Julie Neal May 31, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been to Sanibel and Captiva many time and found the book informative. There are suggestions that the average vacationer would not know to do. I thought it captured the essence of this wonderful area. It is good for the first time visitor to the area, or the experienced vacationer. It was easy to read and use.
Didn't know there was so much! October 27, 2003 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Excellent book! We have been to Captiva about 10 times and just love it there! The statement in the book regarding crossing the causeway is so true, I giggled to myself. I'm heading to Captiva in 4 more days and wish it were sooner! . I'll be on Captiva for 14 days and as I go through the book, I'm not sure I'll be there long enough to accomplish all of the things there are to do on Sanibel and Captiva. I'll be planning out our days, but also making sure there are some days of just sitting on the beach enjoying as it states in the book. Thank you for sharing your secrets with us and for the insight you provided regarding the islanders feelings. It's important for those of us who come visiting keep the island the way it is meant to be kept. If you are planning on going to Sanibel and Captiva, this book is a must. So much more to do than sit on the beach like we have done and enjoyed for the last 10 visits. We'll be looking for those buried treasures!
Absolutely Incredible - All the Info You Need & More! April 17, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Guidebooks are usually so impersonal. You get them for all the great info they have - landmarks, hiking trails, available accommodations - but don't really expect creativity, polls of local kids, and poems. This guidebook *IS* a great guidebook, in that it contains all the usual info/facts/contact numbers you'd want and expect. But it goes so much further, and gives you such a feel for the islands, in such a creative way. They poll the locals on the best restaurants. You can bet where I'll be eating - at the locals' favorite. They poll local kids on topics so you know what your kids will want to do. They have essays and poems from locals to impart real native flavor. Not only has this book given me all I could want on Sanibel/Captiva, it's the best written and most interesting guidebook I've ever seen!
