Super detailed restaurant reviews February 9, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book has such interesting and thorough information on all the Disney restaurants! I bought each of the three major guidebooks, and this one just blows the others away! Let me give you a specific example, by comparing the three main 2008 books. I'll use Tokyo Dining, where, thanks to this guide, my family and I had an especially good meal last week. The following quotes are the ENTIRE description of that restaurant from each book:
The Unofficial Guide 2008: "The pavilion's adjacent Tempura Kiku and Matsunoma Lounge will be replaced in August 2007 with a new dining spot emphasizing sushi."
Birnbaum's Official Guide 2008: "Tokyo Dining, which has replaced Tempura Kiku and Matsunoma Lounges, features sumptuous sushi and tempura temptations. Reservations are suggested."
The Complete Guide 2008: "A combination of good food, great atmosphere and absolutely mind-blowing service, this new Epcot treasure is exactly what a World Showcase restaurant is supposed to be -- a non-threatening way for you to fully experience the cuisine, and atmosphere, of a foreign culture. A mix of traditional Japanese entrees, the menu ($15-$28) includes a tender beef teriyaki and nice shrimp tempura. A separate sushi and sashimi menu ($4-$24) has 49 selections, highlighted by a "volcano" California roll that's sliced, stacked and coated with a creamy (and explosively hot) orange chili sauce. For dessert, the green tea pudding melts in your mouth. The sophisticated, peaceful decor has wonderful diffused lighting. Dark cherry tables sit on a tile floor. But what tops everything are the bows. The hostesses and servers bow to you as you enter the restaurant, as you sit down and every time one of them approaches your table. When you leave, the entire staff bows to you progressively, like a line of falling dominoes. A great place to dine for IllumiNations, the second-story restaurant overlooks the World Showcase Lagoon. Five tables sit right up against the glass. Lunch, dinner. 116 seats."
Now THAT is helpful! Every other restaurant is treated this same way. I rest my case. I can't believe some of the other comments that say it's not detailed enough. My guess is that those reviews are referring to the 2007 version.
By the way, this book would be worth it if you never read one word, for the hundreds of beautiful and unusual photographs. Every page will make you feel like you are right there in Disney World.
The BEST restaurant and resort info February 9, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I noticed a couple of reviews say there's not much restaurant and resort info in this guide. That's the first edition, not this one! This 2008 guide has TREMENDOUS information on every Disney resort, much more useful than even the Unofficial Guide. And the restaurant reviews! Very thorough and complete, far beyond any Disney guide I've seen. The section on the Disney Dining Plan saved us hundreds of dollars!
As for my family's recent Christmas trip his Disney guide told us EVERYTHING about all of Disney World's Christmas events, which really helped us! It has it all... every holiday show, street performance, even specific details on how to see the reading about the birth of Jesus without waiting in line. Outstanding! Other times of year are covered too. There's a lot in the spring. I wish I could come for the ESPN Weekend! Throughout the book the information is VERY up to date, and the many colorful pictures and thousands of interesting tidbits make the book fun to flip through at any time.
A good look February 9, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Great pictures. Not as much detail on eating choices and housing as the Unofficial Guide to Disney however this book touched on aspects and gave specific hints that the other book I purchased missed. I would purchase this book again if I returned to Disney in the future!
Take it with you! February 8, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
We just got back from Disney World and we carried this book with us every day. At first I thought we wouldn't really have time for it, but there are plenty of times where you just stand around for awhile, and there are many little things you have to decide as the day goes on. A big plus is that is has a review of EVERY restaurant, even the small hamburger places. The book is extremely well organized.
Alright if you only want to know the positive February 8, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this hoping to find out the "scoop" on hotels and parks, but what I got was just positive blurbs about everything in general. Don't get me wrong the book is detailed when it comes to rides but doesn't give you any pros or cons about restaurants or hotels. The book does have very nice pictures though.
