Definitely My Favorite WDW Guide January 24, 2008 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I've become a big fan of Julie and Mike Neal's Complete Walt Disney World. First of all, Walt Disney World is a visual experience, so - naturally - I want a visual guide. The Complete Walt Disney World 2008 is just that. With its full color interior that is packed with photos, when you first receive it, you'll spend a good bit of time just flipping through and perusing the photos.
However, the guide also has a number of features that I think make it superior to other guides. In fact, it's actually superior to its own predecessor, the 2007 edition.
I took the 2007 edition with me on my last trip to Disney in order to give it a real, honest-to-goodness experience "out in the field." I realized that the information on the restaurants and lodging was a little light. However, this guide has COMPLETELY fixed this. It now has thorough descriptions of hotels and restaurants. In fact, one point I loved about the lodging guide was that it gives you mileage to all the parks. For instance, when looking at the description for Old Key West, I can see that it is 4 miles from The Magic Kingdom. Seems frivolous at first, but it's truly not. For those planning to jet to one of the parks for dining reservations, this information gives you a good idea of when you need to set out in order to make those reservations.
The lodging pages also now give you rates, restaurants and transportation details (i.e. can you take the boat from the Swan to MGM?). There's even a note of check in and check out times.
The guide also contains those things that make me prefer it to others such as the tickertapes at the bottom of the pages that give you little hints and tips. The "fun finds" section underneath the attraction descriptions that give you a list of "easter eggs" and trivia to look for as you experience the attraction and, of course, a listing of Hidden Mickeys near the rear of the book.
Overall, the book is what a Walt Disney World guide SHOULD be: fun. Plus, as I can attest to: it's small enough to fit into a pack so it won't be cumbersome while you're in the World.
Oh and by the way, for those of you who consider buying the souvenir books, you couldn't do any better than this book. While it is most definitely a guide, it is also a great way to remember some of the attractions and sights of Walt Disney World that other books overlook.
Definitely my favorite WDW guide in print.
Great for first time disney travelers or seasoned January 23, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Having been to disney numerous times and still, having not "seen it all" , I really enjoyed this guidebook. It is not overwhelming, plenty of photos ( especially great for kids), and much info on the history of Walt Disney, the animals of disney, diversions ( spa's , special tours) etc. The chapter on hidden mickeys , will amuse even the most antsy person/child, in line for an attraction. The people who don't enjoy disney are those who don't plan for the trip. You are entering a zone twice the size of Manhattan, you certainly would go to NYC with a guide book and some reservations and plans right? Disney is the same. There are ways to do it best , and have a thoroughly enjoyable time, and, then there are those who are at the top of Main St. without a clue, frustrated, and yelling " we are going to enjoy this , we spent enough money!" Obviously, they forgot to spend that few extra bucks, and some internet time planning and getting familiar with how it all works , and that is very sad. I would recommend this book for seasoned, and new disney travelers. Nice job!
WOW! Nothing else compares January 19, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is the newest Disney World guide, and absolutely, without a doubt, the best. When I first saw it I thought it was just about looks. The clean, clear and colorful design is like eye candy, everything is so well organized, and there are hundreds of beautiful color photos, some showing parts of Disney I've never seen photographed: A girl surfing at the Typhoon Lagoon water park, Cirque du Soleil performers backstage, the Star Wars stormtroopers parading during a Star Wars weekend, a photo montage of both sides of Main Street U.S.A., the gray kangaroo at Animal Kingdom. I didn't even know there were kangaroos there until I read this book! You could spend an hour just looking at the photos.
When you start to read it, however, this book surprises you with its depth. The article on Cinderella Castle extends to explaining how the hallway mosaic was created, and includes a photo of artist Hanns Joachim Scharff making the tiles in 1970. The page about the High School Musical street show describes exactly where to stand to get a front row seat (tougher than you'd think, since no one can be in the street until a moment before the show starts). The book goes so far as to give you advice on which of the three flumes to choose on the Runoff Rapids body slide at the Blizzard Beach water park. I have about a dozen Disney guides, and none of them -- none -- offer anything like this level of helpful information. There is simply no comparison.
I especially like the restaurant chapter. There are interesting and helpful reviews of all the places to eat at Disney, including those at Downtown Disney and in the resorts. Because of this book my family skipped dinner at Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom and instead ate at the nearby Grand Floridian's 1900 Park Fare, where we all cracked up over Cinderella's silly stepsisters and my girls were charmed by Prince Charming kissing their hands. We wouldn't have known to eat there if it wasn't for this book, as no other guide describes the character meals with such detail. We also took the guide's advice and had breakfast at Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge (oh so good!) followed by a stroll out back to look at the African animals on the savanna.
I'm a person that appreciates quality, and this book delivers it in spades. Disney World is a complex place, and to maximize your experience there requires some help and advice. This gorgeous book is what you need. A+!
Great information, great photos too January 18, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This terrific guidebook is very well organized and full of helpful information about every little thing Walt Disney World has to offer. Fun to browse through, too, as the writing is clear and right to the point. There are beautiful photos on almost every page. The restaurant and resort information is certainly the best and most useful of any Disney World guide. Best of all, it fit easily in my wife's purse, so we could take it with us every day of our stay. Strongly recommended!
The most beautiful, most helpful Disney guide January 17, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book is gorgeous! I love that it includes photographs of all the rides and shows. I have an 8-year-old girl and having a photo of every attraction really helps me figure out which ones are appropriate for her. And speaking of the photos, they are STUNNING. Best of all from a practical standpoint is that this book tells you EXACTLY what you need to do to get special treatment for an autistic child, which my daughter is. I also really used the advice on how to meet the princesses. My daughter is a huge princess fan and this book had a lot of insight on how to make that happen. Our dinner with Cinderella was fantastic, and the only reason I knew about it was the ultra specific and right to the point advice in this book. This is by far the most beautiful and helpful guide I have ever seen about Disney World.
