Is there rhyme or reason to this tale, or was mayhem and madness the driving force behind this magical mystery tour? A few units of psychology would be helpful for sorting through the maze of lost souls set adrift in a sea of confusion, delusion, and illusion among the neon lights of Las Vegas. The surreal storyline spans the spectrum from sage sermonizing to sophisticated psychobabble, with our embattled protagonist being worn and torn from both sides. It doesn't read as a straightforward superhero saga, and people not steeped in Dr. Fate lore may be confused. Is it even a Fate adventure at all, or an analytical study of a professional yet still relatable everyman, currently scarcely surviving in an emotional and financial abyss? Just as the characters portrayed in the comic within this comic may represent the inner turmoil and duality of its author, perhaps we are supposed to recognize revealing reflections of our inner selves as well. Maybe this is just one big group therapy session, a literal and metaphorical contrasting of hope vs. despair, life vs. death, aptly written by a man sadly teetering on that very precipice himself. Steve Gerber's unfortunate passing, a poignant loss suffered throughout the comic industry, prevented him from completing this intricate yet insightful inspection into the human condition, allegorically articulated via a superhero. Only time will tell whether or not DC continues forward with this direction or tries a totally different approach.
